If you’ve ever wished you could get married amidst the rugged landscapes of the Swiss Alps, without actually traveling all the way to Switzerland… you’re in luck! The little town of Ouray, Colorado is pretty much as close as you can get to that dramatic alpine wilderness here in the Western US. No long plane ride required! Ouray also happens to be an incredible place to get married – so in this guide, I’ll be covering all things Ouray elopements.
I’ll take you through all the essentials of eloping in & around Ouray, from must-see locations to wedding permitting made easy. As a local Colorado elopement photographer, trust me when I say I know my stuff: I’ve done this a time or two (or twenty!), and now I’m here to give you the inside scoop. Ready to plan a stress-free, totally unforgettable adventure in one of America’s most iconic mountain towns?

Where is Ouray?
Ouray is one of many historic mining towns nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. It’s located on the northern end of the mountain range, so if you head south, you’ll hit other quintessential Colorado mountain towns like Telluride, Silverton, and eventually Durango. And the best part? Ouray sits at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, so it’s a high-altitude destination that truly serves as a gateway into the best outdoor rec in the area!
This area of southwest Colorado is fairly remote, so when it comes to traveling to Ouray, one option is to take a road trip into the mountains from a bigger city like Denver (or even Moab, Albuquerque, or Salt Lake City, depending on where you’re coming from). Alternatively, you can fly into Durango (DRO), Telluride (KTEX), or Cortez (CEZ), then rent a car to head into the mountains via the scenic San Juan Skyway.

Why Elope in Ouray?
Man, I could go on forever about why Ouray is such a phenomenal elopement destination, but I’ll try to stick to the main points for you. I may be biased, since Ouray is literally my favorite mountain town ever!
The first reason you should elope in Ouray: it’s known as the “Switzerland of America”… which I feel like pretty much says everything you need to know. Nicknamed for its dramatic natural beauty reminiscent of the Swiss Alps, Ouray honestly feels like it was plucked straight from a storybook. The striking alpine landscapes, the enchanting town itself and the sense of tranquility it offers, the high-elevation trails, and the endless gorgeous vistas everywhere you go… it’s easy to see why Ouray is often likened to one of Europe’s most sought-after destinations.

In addition to its alluring nickname, Ouray also holds the title of the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Colorado! The beauty of the surrounding rugged wilderness makes Ouray an unreal place to adventure year-round, from world-class ice climbing in the winter to breathtaking hikes and thrilling OHV rides in the summer. You’ll have endless opportunities to experience Ouray’s “3 W’s” – wildlife, wildflowers, and waterfalls – no matter how far you want (or don’t want) to hike.
Along with being the gateway to so much unparalleled outdoor rec, Ouray is located on one end of the Million Dollar Highway, a stunning 25-mile stretch of road that connects it to Silverton. This highway – that, yes, cost literally a million dollars to build – is part of the San Juan Skyway Colorado Scenic Byway! That may be a mouthful of a name to say, but it’s the 236-mile loop that connects many of the famous mining towns around Southwest Colorado. Drive along any part of the byway and you’ll experience mountain, valley, and gorge views that are pretty dang hard to beat.

Where to Elope in Ouray: Top Elopement Locations & Wedding Venues
Ouray has a TON of killer elopement locations that don’t require hiking, and are instead accessible by 4×4 OHV trails. This is great news for couples who don’t necessarily want to gather up a ton of hiking gear in order to find a remote and epic spot! You can 4×4 yourself if you’re comfortable, or hire a private tour guide to bring you to your locations. If you decide to do the latter, I recommend hiring through either Switzerland of America Jeepsor Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours.
With that in mind, I’ve gathered a list of 5 of the best places to elope in Ouray, as well as 2 gorgeous Ouray wedding venues if you’re looking for a more formal space to celebrate. Whether you’re picturing a classic Ouray elopement ceremony location with mountain views, or a top-rated venue to host a small group of your loved ones, this amazing area has something for every couple.
Either way, I’ll be there as your local photographer & guide to help hand-pick locations that align with your vision, your priorities, and the vibe you’re craving for your big day.

Alpine Loop
Alpine Loop is one of many gorgeous 4×4 backcountry roads that wind through the San Juans, connecting the towns of Ouray, Lake City, and Silverton. This 60-mile loop is remote, rugged, rough, and worth every single (literal) bump in the road for the pristine alpine views you get along the way. Only 4 miles of the whole route are paved, and two of the mountain passes you’ll traverse along the way (Cinnamon Pass and Engineer Pass) require high clearance and 4WD – so make sure you’re prepared with the right vehicle.
Yankee Boy Basin
Yankee Boy Basin is a super popular spot about 10 miles from Ouray, accessible by medium- and high-clearance vehicles – though 4WD is required if you’d like to continue from the basin to the Mt. Sneffels trailhead. Yankee Boy Basin is easily the best place in the area for wildflower viewing, especially from mid-July through early August, when the blooms are at their peak. Keep in mind that, because of the vibrant colors and spectacular alpine scenery, this spot does get pretty crowded during high season!
Ophir Pass
Connecting Silverton and Telluride, Ophir Pass is another scenic drive with a multitude of beautiful viewpoints, overlooks, and off-roading routes galore. It’s definitely one of the more approachable off-roading areas in Southwest Colorado, offering amazing views of the San Juans without too much effort – at least, compared to passes like Black Bear that require a lot more of an intense adventure. Ophir is a great option if you want a little bit of a thrill without going too crazy, and are okay with heights!
Imogene Pass
Interested in more of a challenge? Imogene Pass is steep, rocky, and narrow, and, of course, unbelievably picturesque. It’s the second-highest drivable pass in Colorado, and the highest in the entire San Juan Mountain Range! You’ll need a 4WD, high-clearance vehicle with skid plates, and ideally prior experience with technical roads – otherwise, I recommend hiring a local experienced guide to take you on a Jeep tour.
Black Bear Pass
Black Bear Pass isn’t for the faint of heart (or the inexperienced), as it’s the most dangerous and technically difficult OHV trail on this list. You’ll venture through high switchbacks, past Bridal Veil Falls, and along extremely narrow shelf roads, with dramatic views the entire way. Unless you’re personally experienced in very technical, expert-level trails, this is one you’ll want to book a guided tour of.

Gold Mountain Ranch
This Ouray wedding venue is about to make you rethink what a mountain wedding can look like – in the best way. Gold Mountain Ranch is a 1,200-acre ranch nestled above the town of Ouray, offering the dream mountain escape for luxury elopements and micro weddings. Rooted in the rich mining history of the San Juans, this ranch is the perfect mix of high-end ski resort & rustic cabin-in-the-woods vibes, with wide-open skies, tranquil landscapes, and endless alpine scenery. They even have an addition to the venue specifically for elopements and micro weddings of up to 12 guests, called the Overlook!
Gold Mountain Ranch offers both elopement and micro wedding packages, with on-site lodging available for up to 22 guests total. Who wouldn’t want to experience a lavish mountain retreat at this stunning ranch, surrounded by nothing but dramatic mountain peaks and the people they love most?
The Western Ouray
The Western is such a fun hotel located in Ouray, boasting that same kinda blend of mountain elegance and historic charm as Gold Mountain Ranch. Whether you’re planning a private elopement or an intimate wedding, The Western doubles as a fantastic venue and a great place to stay during your trip – plus, you have the option to buy out the full property if you want all 16 suites to yourself!

The Best Time of Year for Elopements in Ouray
First things first: A lot of the best viewpoints around Ouray sit along 4×4 roads or higher-elevation passes, which means timing and logistics are key as you plan your elopement.
So below, I’ve outlined a few main factors you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing the best time of year to elope in Ouray!
Mountain passes & trail accessibility
If you’re not familiar with Colorado’s mountainous terrain, you might be surprised to hear that snow snowpack can linger well into early summer. This means that, if you want to elope further into the mountains, at a higher elevation, or anywhere accessible by 4×4, you’ll need to pick a later summer date after the snow has melted. Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass, and Black Bear Pass are a few to keep an eye on, with Ophir often one of the first to clear in June & Imgone one of the last, between late June and early July.
The same goes for trails; higher-elevation routes will stay closed until later in the season, so late spring or summer elopements will need to stick to lower hikes that are free of snowpack (unless you’re looking for a snowy adventure). Remember that temperatures get colder the further you get into the mountains, so alpine lakes are usually frozen until the summer months too!
Websites like Stay the Trail or the Forest Service will often offer interactive mountain pass, OHV, and trail maps, with real-time statuses you can monitor as your elopement date gets closer. As a local who is familiar with the changing conditions and weather patterns of the San Juans, this is something I’ll provide guidance on – so don’t worry about having to pick the “right” date on your own.

Weather conditions
The high-altitude, alpine climate of the San Juan Mountains brings long, cold, and snowy winters, with mild summers that really only last a couple of months. So in general, late summer and early fall tend to be the best seasons to elope in Ouray.
In summer, the wildflowers are dreamy, there are INFINITE possibilities for outdoor adventures, and everything is accessible – including hiking, biking, scenic drives, swimming, paddleboarding, canoeing, etc!
Fair warning about summer weather in the San Juans, though: late summer storm season can bring fast-moving thunderstorms that roll in out of nowhere, so make sure to be prepared for unexpected rain, wind, and dark skies.
Fall brings crisper, cooler mountain air, and you can still go hiking, offroading, & enjoy natural hot springs as long as the weather allows. The main draw of fall elopements in Ouray, though, is the golden aspens that literally light up the mountains!
Winter is just as beautiful in their own right, but won’t offer trail access like summer and fall do (unless you want to go skiing, snowshoeing, etc.). I will say, it’s hard to beat the magical, cozy mountain town vibes you get in the winter months!
And we sort of have spring, but it goes by in the blink of an eye; essentially we just cycle through summer, fall, and winter!

Wildflowers
If you’re dying to elope among the wildflowers, surrounded by colorful blooms and greenery, we can absolutely make that happen. Wildflowers are one of Ouray’s “3 W’s,” remember? There’s just one catch: you’ve gotta time it right. Nothing kills a well-intentioned plan more than realizing that the mountain wildflower meadow you’ve been envisioning is still under ten inches of snow.
Typically, wildflowers start to explode with color in early July, with peak bloom lasting through the rest of the month. Spots like Yankee Boy Basin, Engineer Pass, Imogene Pass, and Ophir Pass are going to be your best bet at spotting multi-colored varieties of gorgeous wildflowers, scattered through the peaks and valleys.

How to Get Permits for Your Ouray Elopement
Colorado is famous for being one of the easiest states to get married in – especially if you elope somewhere like Ouray, which doesn’t have many permit requirements. When we work together to plan your big day, you’ll get access to my resources that delve into the official stuff. For now, though, let’s go over the essentials you need to know about permitting for your Ouray elopement.
Is Ouray part of a National Park?
Nope! Ouray is not part of a National Park. Certain areas of the San Juans, however, are made up of National Forest Land, as well as land protected by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
Do we need a permit to get married in Ouray?
It depends on the exact location of your elopement, as some areas require extra planning to keep things low-impact and crowd-free.
For elopements or small weddings within the San Juan National Forest (such as Box Canyon Trail), you won’t need a Special Use Permit unless you have more than 75 people – which I don’t generally recommend anyway, as wild, outdoor locations like these are best for small groups.
For elopements or small weddings on BLM land (such as Alpine Loop), you may need a Special Recreation Permit depending on the scope of your ceremony, expected group size, and more.
And remember: even if you do need to obtain a permit, it’ll be much easier than getting one for a National Park elopement (like you would in a place like Rocky Mountain National Park).
The good news is that either way, this is the kind of behind-the-scenes stuff I help guide you through so the day feels effortless on your end. You don’t have to become an expert in regulations or paperwork: I’ll help you navigate the details so you can focus on the exciting parts of planning your Ouray elopement.
